Desert Schools policy concerning garnishment of disabled members income by creditors was no different than that of any other banking or savings establishment. The attitude is minimize their obligation and let the member be responsible, even if he is handicapped. The law is on the side of the collector not the "victim".
Desert Schools seems to have changed their policy concerning this issue, I hope!
Note: No place in the web site are you notified that the overdraft charge is $35.00!
I used the "overdraft protection" that Desert Schools has started offering, the problem was that I didn't understand that there was a $35.00 service charge for each transaction! (I paid $35.00 for some very small transactions)
I now owe the Credit Union $640.00 and change. Going into the Desert Schools Federal Credit Union and saying "I didn't know" was no help, I asked.

The paragraph below insinuates that one is "borrowing" from the credit union and that is not what overdraft protection is meant to do. Since I paid $35.00 for a small transaction and hadn't known what the fee was I thought that that would be the logical solution. Covering an accidental overwritten check or debit charge is what it is for, and the only way it should be used. I apologize for any misunderstanding I may have left anyone with.

So... If you need to use the overdraft protection: try to see if you can estimate how much money you need for however much time there is left in the month and draw all of it out at one time. (Remember, you must pay the whole amount back in one payment! That way you are only going to pay one transaction fee instead of all the ones I have to pay!
It is sad to see, that Desert Schools had to find a way to make their members "victims" like Chase, Bank of America, Citi Bank and the rest did to theirs!

Important
If you are handicapped and find you are having trouble with collection agents:
Note: So far Desert Schools has become more helpful than they used to be when it comes to protecting my accounts.
1. Send them(the collection agent, whoever you are getting correspondence from a copy of your disability rating) they are not allowed to harass disabled people with all that bologna!
2. Remember, although your bank or credit union is not supposed to honor claims against handicapped income all do, but there are steps you can take to protect your income. Your Credit Union knows several steps you can take, so ask.
MAKE SURE that your Credit Union or bank has copy of your award letter when you open your account. That way they can not claim ignorance!
Desert Schools E-mail address if you would like to leave them a comment.
